This trapped moisture will disintegrate the face of the brick or stone, this is also known as spalling. In many cases the brickwork on the external structure may have deteriorated due to weathering causing cracks and perishing the brick, which is known as spalling. If this does occur, it is wise to tend to the issue immediately before the damage becomes more widespread.

Generally, this is not seen as a major problem, unless it is covering signs of deterioration.

If biological growth is visible and covering deterioration, the likelihood is that the trapped moisture has caused the deterioration and not the biological growth. In saying this, the biological growth may add to deterioration as it keeps the surface moist which increases the risk of corrosion.
